Watercolors MARCHAND The Alps Gallery

Hommage to Bradford WASHBURN

Bradford WASHBURN is a famous American explorer and geographer who made extraordinary beautiful aerial photographies of Mount McKinley, but also fortunately in the Alps, where he followed Georges Tairraz (family of early Mt Blanc photographers). All Washburn work is in black and white.
I had the chance to attend in 1997 the exhibition of his work made by Museo Nazionale della Montagna "Duca degli Abruzzi" in Turin. The following wash drawings were made based on the inspiring book of this exhibition: Sulla verticale del grande nord.

Technical precision: Wash drawing with black Indian ink is maybe more difficult than watercolor: Ink itself is not so easy to master, and no color may "save" the drawing. Only differences in dark value matter. In fact all options have to be taken up BEFORE beginning to draw.
